Seventh seeds Lyudmyla Kichenok and Jelena Ostapenko proved to be a formidable team this year as they captured the Western & Southern Open title and the Rookwood Cup with a 7-6(5) 6-3 win over Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Ellen Perez. They upset the top seeds in the semifinals and have also won in Birmingham, reached two other finals and the semifinals at the French Open and Wimbledon this year. Finalists Melichar-Martinez and Perez reached their second WTA 1000 final in the past two weeks.
